Is gravel riding just 90’s mountain biking? Sure, why not!

Bring your purple anodized Onza bar ends, helmet covers, toe clips and chromo bike to the 7th annual Gravel Growler/1st annual Yukon Gravel Championship.

Since houses are no longer $55,000 like they were in the 90s (no research was done whatsoever to determine this number), the race planning committee decided to provide two races for the price of one! And if you’re a Velonorth member, that price is FREE.

While we are on the topic of free, all riders get a free schnitzel and beer. What could be better? $55,000 housing? Well, aside from that. Nothing? We thought so too.

The Ride

Make no mistake; this is always a challenging course. The first riders should complete the long course in about 2.5 hrs. The descent from Fish Lake is steep and fast, use caution. Conditions through the ski trails and singletrack of Mt. Mac will be variable. Be prepared with enough food, water and tools to be self-sufficient for up to 4 hours. Ride with a cell phone. There are no aid stations on course.

There’ll be a time cut off at the intersection of Copper Haul Road and Fish Lake Road, the 16km point. Riders will have 1 hour to make it to this point on the course. Riders arriving at Fish Lake Road after 12pm will be directed to the short (40km Meowler) course. Ensuring riders aren’t too spread out on the course will improve safety for both riders and volunteers.

As if you don’t already know, the weather in early October can be, how shall we say, unpredictable. Dress for the weather: we recommend bringing an extra layer with you just in case. The climb to Fish Lake will warm you to be sure, but the descent can be chilly – we won’t have a soigneur handing out sheets of newspaper to stuff up your jersey before you drop back down into the valley.

In the spirit of the one day classics and the Belgian Hardwo/men who ride them, the Gravel Growler goes rain or shine and we expect you to too.

Post-ride Festivities
